Effects of carbohydrate, branched-chain amino acids, and arginine in recovery period on the subsequent performance in wrestlers
Many athletes need to participate in multiple events in a single day. The efficient post-exercise glycogen recovery may be critical for the performance in subsequent exercise. This study examined whether post-exercise carbohydrate supplementation could restore the performance in the subsequent simulated wrestling match. The effect of branched-chain amino acids and arginine on glucose disposal and performance was also investigated. Nine well-trained male wrestlers participated in 3 trials in a random order. Each trial contained 3 matches with a 1-hr rest between match 1 and 2, and a 2-hr rest between match 2 and 3. Each match contained 3 exercise periods interspersed with 1-min rests. The subjects alternated 10-s all-out sprints and 20-s rests in each exercise period. At the end of match 2, 3 different supplementations were consumed: 1.2 g/kg glucose (CHO trial), 1 g/kg glucose + 0.1 g/kg Arg + 0.1 g/kg BCAA (CHO+AA trial), or water (placebo trial). The peak and average power in the 3 matches was similar in the 3 trials. After the supplementation, CHO and CHO+AA trial showed significantly higher glucose and insulin, and lower glycerol and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations than the placebo trial. There was no significant difference in these biochemical parameters between the CHO and CHO+AA trials. Supplementation of carbohydrate with or without BCAA and arginine during the post-match period had no effect on the performance in the following simulated match in wrestlers. In addition, BCAA and arginine did not provide additional insulinemic effect
Knowledge sourcing and firm performance in an industrializing economy: the case of Taiwan (1992-2003)
We examine the impact of R&D and technology imports on firm performance in Taiwan's manufacturing industry in a policy context of industrial upgrading. To do so, we estimate a Translog production function on two panels (covering 1992-1995 and 1997-2003), using stochastic frontier models. We find that the effects of both knowledge inputs become significant in a larger number of industries in the second panel. These results suggest that the policies encouraging innovation implemented from 1991 onwards paid off in the second half of the 1990s, with innovation driving firm sales. In traditional industries, the effect of innovation can be interpreted as an effort to catch up with the global technology frontier. In the electronics and high-technology industries, it rather testifies of the emergence of a new domain of specialization for Taiwan-which was largely enabled by the aforementioned innovation policies
Critical points in edge tunneling between generic FQH states
A general description of weak and strong tunneling fixed points is developed
in the chiral-Luttinger-liquid model of quantum Hall edge states. Tunneling
fixed points are a subset of `termination' fixed points, which describe
boundary conditions on a multicomponent edge. The requirement of unitary time
evolution at the boundary gives a nontrivial consistency condition for possible
low-energy boundary conditions. The effect of interactions and random hopping
on fixed points is studied through a perturbative RG approach which generalizes
the Giamarchi-Schulz RG for disordered Luttinger liquids to broken left-right
symmetry and multiple modes. The allowed termination points of a multicomponent
edge are classified by a B-matrix with rational matrix elements. We apply our
approach to a number of examples, such as tunneling between a quantum Hall edge
and a superconductor and tunneling between two quantum Hall edges in the
presence of interactions. Interactions are shown to induce a continuous
renormalization of effective tunneling charge for the integrable case of
tunneling between two Laughlin states. The correlation functions of
electronlike operators across a junction are found from the B matrix using a
simple image-charge description, along with the induced lattice of boundary
operators. Many of the results obtained are also relevant to ordinary Luttinger

Performance Evaluation of Road Traffic Control Using a Fuzzy Cellular Model
In this paper a method is proposed for performance evaluation of road traffic
control systems. The method is designed to be implemented in an on-line
simulation environment, which enables optimisation of adaptive traffic control
strategies. Performance measures are computed using a fuzzy cellular traffic
model, formulated as a hybrid system combining cellular automata and fuzzy
calculus. Experimental results show that the introduced method allows the
performance to be evaluated using imprecise traffic measurements. Moreover, the
fuzzy definitions of performance measures are convenient for uncertainty

Sintering behaviour of Al-Cu-Mg-Si blends
The increasing demand for automotive industries to reduce the weight of the vehicles has led to a growing usage of Al alloy powder metallurgy (P/M) parts such as camshaft bearing caps, shock absorber pistons and brake calipers [1,2]. In order to control the sintered microstructure and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy powder metallurgical (P/M) parts, it is essential to establish a fundamental understanding of the microstructural development during the sintering process. Current research at Birmingham University is focussed on the investigation of the sintering behaviour of Al-Cu-Mg-Si powder blends using a combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Microanaylsis (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Mortality Dependence of Cu Dual Damascene Interconnects on Adjacent Segments
Electromigration experiments have been carried out on straight interconnects that have single vias at each end, and are divided into two segments by a via in the center ("dotted-I" structures). For dotted-i structures in the second metal layer (M2) and with 25µm-long segments length, failures occurred even when the product of the current density and segment length (jL) was as low as 1250A/cm, even though via terminated 25µm-long lines are "immortal" when (jL)cr < 1500 A/cm. Moreover, we found the mortalities of the dotted-I segments to be dependent on the current density and current direction in the adjacent segment. These result suggest that there is not a definite value of jL product that defines true immortality in individual segments that are part of an interconnect tree, and that the critical value of jL for Cu dual damascene segments is dependent on the magnitude and direction of current flow in adjacent segments. Therefore, (jL)cr values determined in two-terminal via-terminated lines cannot be directly applied to interconnects with branched segments, but rather the magnitude as well as the direction of the current flow in the adjoining segments must be taken into consideration in determining the immortality of interconnect segments.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA
Can we detect Hot or Cold spots in the CMB with Minkowski Functionals?
In this paper, we investigate the utility of Minkowski Functionals as a probe
of cold/hot disk-like structures in the CMB. In order to construct an accurate
estimator, we resolve a long-standing issue with the use of Minkowski
Functionals as probes of the CMB sky -- namely that of systematic differences
("residuals") when numerical and analytical MF are compared. We show that such
residuals are in fact by-products of binning, and not caused by pixelation or
masking as originally thought. We then derive a map-independent estimator that
encodes the effects of binning, applicable to beyond our present work. Using
this residual-free estimator, we show that small disk-like effects (as claimed
by Vielva et al.) can be detected only when a large sample of such maps are
averaged over. In other words, our estimator is noise-dominated for small disk
sizes at WMAP resolution. To confirm our suspicion, we apply our estimator to
the WMAP7 data to obtain a null result.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
New Polynomial Cases of the Weighted Efficient Domination Problem
Let G be a finite undirected graph. A vertex dominates itself and all its
neighbors in G. A vertex set D is an efficient dominating set (e.d. for short)
of G if every vertex of G is dominated by exactly one vertex of D. The
Efficient Domination (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d. in
G, is known to be NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes.
In particular, the ED problem remains NP-complete for 2P3-free graphs and
thus for P7-free graphs. We show that the weighted version of the problem
(abbreviated WED) is solvable in polynomial time on various subclasses of
2P3-free and P7-free graphs, including (P2+P4)-free graphs, P5-free graphs and
other classes.
Furthermore, we show that a minimum weight e.d. consisting only of vertices
of degree at most 2 (if one exists) can be found in polynomial time. This
contrasts with our NP-completeness result for the ED problem on planar
bipartite graphs with maximum degree 3
